Thoughts on The Vampire Diaries

Unanswered questions or just something that is playing on my mind. Below are a few of my thoughts on any outstanding Vampire Diaries questions.

Klaus and the Originals

The Originals were one part of The Vampire Diaries that really caught my attention and I am surprised no one has taken this on as a fanfic as yet. It was a somewhat interesting twist to place on the storyline for Dark Reunion and was never resolved at the completiton of the book. Who were the Originals? What do they do now? How many are there?
Readers can only speculate about what the Originals actually are, but have a vague idea, from what other ancient vampires are in other vampire series.

Klaus’s Death?

In VD3 when Katherine is explaining what she had done over the last 500 years, she said she went to Klaus, but after awhile she got bored of him and killed him, however Klaus never explains what really did happen in VD4.
It seems that Katherine may have just been bragging to the trio in order to scare them or make herself seem stronger. However, more likely that Katherine was mistaken and thought Klaus had been killed. This does raise the question of Klaus's motive in going after the Salvatores, as he doesn't seem like a person that would seek revenge for one person. But since Klaus is supposed to be extremely powerful, the best explaination is that Katherine did believe that she had killed Klaus.

Dark Reunion - Necessary or waste of time?

While I loved the idea of a fourth book, it can be seen as a waste of time. Sure, most readers were left heart-broken with The Fury's ending, especially for Stefan but some argue it was better like that, rather than having a forth book that introduced so many other ends.
I think for Damon fans, Dark Reunion gave us a closer look at his character, how he operates, and of course, showed us more about the relationship between Stefan and Damon. For other fans, Dark Reunion got Elena out of the way as storyteller, and focused on Bonnie (another dark point for me).

Bonnie

Love her or hate her? For me, I see Bonnie as a harmless ball of fluff, she doesn't rate as one of my favourite cast members of the series and I don't like the idea of the Damon/Bonnie shippers but at the same time, I did like the way LJ Smith developed Bonnie over the course of the series, especially in Dark Reunion, I began to appreciate Bonnie a lot more.
But when we go into the Damon/Bonnie relationship, the first thing that comes to my mind is that Damon didn't care one way or another. If Damon could get Bonnie as a mid-evening snack, that would be a good thing, but I doubt that Damon would be annoyed if he couldn't. Damon liked having his way, and the only reason he was angry at Matt interupting, was that Matt was in his way. Damon was the hunter, and Matt interupted him stalking his prey.
On her side, I doubt Bonnie attraction was anything more than a fleeting moment. Damon was a cute guy that initially seemed available. But Bonnie was a romantic, and eventually she would realise that Damon wouldn't give her what she wanted. Besides, if you were Bonnie, wouldn't you admire Damon?

Mrs. Flowers

Mrs. Flowers was a light addition to The Vampire Diaries series and of course one of those good topics to dissect in discussions. Was she a batty-old lady? A witch? Something else? One of the more interesting ideas that I have heard was that she was a 'guardian' of Fell's Church.
Mrs Flowers, seemed to give her 'approval' to the group, especially in VD4 it seemed like she knew who Damon and Stefan were, and knew what the group was after. However, she never really helped against Klaus or Katherine by giving them outright help or hints.

Power with Age?

I have always assumed that a vampire becomes stronger with their age and the fact that they drink human blood. That a vampires strength depends on them doing both of the above. In several series, it seems that both of these contribute to your power. But when I was creating the comparison section (no longer online), several people seemed to think that it was just the blood drinking. In other series such as the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books, a vampire can be a 1000 years old, but never become a 'master vampire'. In The Vampire Diaries, no out right mention that age contributes to power is made, but I would again assume that Elena isn't as strong as Stefan. But Stefan, with drinking human blood, could be a force against his brother - however, this arguement is weakened, due to his rage at Elena's death. Personally, I would imagine that Damon would always be stronger than say, Elena, even if she did begin drinking human blood.
